Affirmations: Weight loss depends on them
Affirmations — those things you say or think about yourself — shape your life and directly impact your weight loss efforts. You may not believe in affirmations, or you may know very little about them, but they are still at work in your life. Every time you say something like, “I’m never going to lose this weight!” you reinforce the difficulty you’re having and decrease your chances of achieving your weight loss goal because your subconscious believes what you say.
Your core beliefs stem from early childhood and how you were raised. If you were told as a young child that you’d never amount to anything, you’ll find it very hard to be successful. Sound hopeless? Thankfully, no.
It’s possible to change your life, including your ability to lose weight, by using positive affirmations to change your thoughts and speech. By isolating each negative belief you can create a positive affirmation to counteract it. If you stop saying, “I’m never going to lose this weight!” and replace it with, “I lose weight quickly and easily,” you can make the difference between success and failure.
Take some time, even a week or two, to write down all of the negative things you say about yourself. You may be amazed at just how many there are! It would be very difficult and discouraging to try to change all of them at once. Instead, go through your list and write down the ones about weight loss. This will be a good place to start.
Write a positive affirmation to counteract each negative statement. Writing an affirmation is not difficult. Be sure to write each one in the present tense as if it’s happening today. It should be a positive statement about what you want in life as if it already exists. There are some examples below to get you started.
Repeat your new affirmations several times a day or whenever you find yourself drifting back to your old negative thoughts. What you are doing is reprogramming your subconscious with new truths until it quits sabotaging your efforts.
You may find yourself struggling to say some of your affirmations; they may seem like an out-and-out lie. That’s fine. It just means your subconscious doesn’t want to give up that negative belief. Persevere and you will begin to see remarkable changes. One of the most effective ways to energize your affirmations is to say them in front of a mirror. You might even take one that seems exceptionally powerful and write it on your bathroom mirror in lipstick.
Writing affirmations
Since we are discussing how affirmations can help you with weight loss, let’s start with some of the things you might find yourself thinking or saying throughout the day. Have you ever said …
- I’m fat and stupid.
- I don’t have enough willpower to lose weight.
- I’ll always be fat.
Try these instead …
- I know how to lose weight and see results every week.
- I give my body what it needs to achieve my weight loss goals.
- I weigh what I should and feel great!
Changing your thinking is never easy. It takes determination to make it happen. As your thoughts change, your attitude about life and your relationships will, too. Be aware that some of the people in your life are going to feel uncomfortable with the “new you.” They may even say negative and hurtful things. Don’t worry, though. You have the new skills you need to keep yourself positive and watch your dreams come true.

I’m not going to give those negative thoughts about my body any power. Instead I’m going to incorporate positive affirmations about my body into my daily mantra.
Thanks for your support.

Thanks, Flora
Even though it’s not a technically correct affirmation, the one I used while I lost 100 pounds was: “I deserve to be happy and healthy.” It was simple and worked beautifully because my normal mindset was that I needed to take care of my husband, children, church responsibilities and community commitments before I could even think about what I needed. This affirmation reminded me to put myself first.
